Day 6 - To Teruel, Aragón - 198 miles
Day 6
Day 6 profile
I had planned the routes so as to be arriving at our
destinations between 5 and 6pm. With the exception of this day I had
planned that we start riding at 10am. This gave us about 5-7 hours of
riding per day which is sufficient to enjoy, any more and the destination starts
to become the object rather than the ride.
When I have been riding on my own with no particular schedules
to keep I don't book accommodation, I take pot luck and have found some
interesting places. When in company, or with the boss on the pillion, then
I like to have the accommodation planned so I had pre-booked all our stops by
fax and email. Some of the places I had booked before, others were chosen by
reputation.
I had planned for us to start this day at 11am. Sure
enough we were mounted up and off at 10:55. A quick trip to the Carrefour,
accompanied by the ladies in the car and then we were off. I put Andy in
the lead with a request he just take us onto the motorway. We had one way
comms - he could hear me but had no means of answering me back.
Adios
Señoras
Andy surprised me a bit as, instead of turning right out of the
Carrefour, he turned left back towards Alicante. Oh well, follow him and
see where we can rejoin the motorway. Sign spotted. "Turn right
here. Andy". 200 yds later I realised we had turned early.
Can't be counted as a GPS mistake this one, more a misreading of signposts.
Back we went and took the correct turn. Once on the motorway we settled
down. I was mindful of Andy's request for fuel in 30 miles. The
Fireblade's smaller tank meant that Andy was keen to find fuel at about every
100 miles. A test later in the week showed us that he could have gone a
lot further and that because he had little experience of doing long trips on the
Fireblade he had underestimated the tank range. Still stopping at the 100
mile point was a good excuse to stretch the legs.
At 11:32 and 20 miles from Alicante we fuelled up. After a
further 48 miles we left the motorway having been sat on it for 1 hour. Now at 12:20 we headed North up the N330. Nice road, some
straight bits interspersed with some excellent bends and the surface was good.
This is the type of Spain I enjoy. Andy was also eulogising about the
spectacular beauty of the countryside when we took a photo opportunity.
N 330
Jalance
At Requena, 98 miles from the last fuel stop, we refueled.
It was 13:46, time to find lunch. A new bypass around Utiel was not on the
GPS, but I ignored the glitch and carried on. At Sinarcas and 14:15 I was
looking around for a restaurant and decided to ask a guy standing on the corner
talking into his mobile phone. He carried on talking and ignored me but I
noticed we were parked right next to a restaurant - you would not have known it
as you passed. 2998 ft N39.73264 W1.22904 .In we went. Great
meal. 3 courses and 9 Euros each.
Back on the road and 1 hour 15 minutes later we continued north. At Talayuelas we hung a right onto the Cuv 6001. An undulating
road surface with plenty of scenery.
At Manzaneruela we hung a right onto the N 330A, which I'm
guessing was the original N330 before the nice new road was built. This
takes a winding course to Santa Cruz de Moya and joins the Cm9221. This road
too is excellent and very picturesque as it meanders alongside the Rio Turia.
It becomes the N330A again and then we rejoined the N330 for the final run in to
Teruel.
Andy and his Fireblade
We arrived at the Parador de Teruel at 17:33, so achieving my
target. It is an impressive Parador, just set back from the N330, which is a
relatively busy road, so it is not in the quietest of surroundings but the
comfort and decor were very acceptable. The food was every bit as good as I
have come to expect in a Parador.
