10:18 and the temperature was already 69 °F.  The run along to Guardo on the C626 is a little mundane, again there are extensive road improvements along here.  From Guardo to Cistierna is a little more interesting.  Once on the N621 heading towards Riaño and the road runs alongside the Rio Elsa and is both wonderfully scenic and a pleasure to ride - even if we had to make frequent stops so that Neil could check his hydration levels.

bc9.jpg (71479 bytes) Lots of wide roads with good visibility and large sweeping bends
bc10.jpg (70099 bytes) We changed positions in order to get some footage with the rest in front of me.  A short while later we stopped in Riaño for a doughnut and a coffee, and water.
PICT2949.jpg (154161 bytes) As we got to this view Daryl was in front of me and Andy and I wanted to take the photo opportunity.  Unfortunately, as you may remember, Daryl had declined the comms and even though I was flashing my headlight, blasting my horn and waving my arm frantically to get his attention to stop it was to no avail.  He says the mirrors on the Blackbird are very good (- for shaving?).  So Daryl continued blithely unaware that we had stopped, Neil went after him and Andy and I went back up to this spot.  You can see the road as it folds its way down the mountain. 14:04, 4662 ft 80.7 °F, N43.09503 W5.21732.  Some 20 minutes later and 7.6 miles further on Daryl eventually realised that there was only one other rider with him and stopped and Andy and I caught up with him.  With the air temperature at 87.4 °F I thought there was a little frost about.

Tanes on the As17, 14:56:49, 1648 ft 91.1 °F, N43.20567 W5.40034 and feeling distinctly warm we stopped for lunch.  I'd left my Spanish menu guide in my top box and we were struggling a bit with the menu as it wasn't written down.  Andy spotted someone eating what appeared to be a stew and the guy indicated it was good.  So we said "We'll have 4 of those".  Andy's eyesight isn't perhaps that good as the stew was baby squid stewed in its own ink.  Neil was happy, I didn't mind, Andy eats anything but Daryl is not keen on seafood!!!  He did, though rise to the challenge but it was like watching an episode from a reality TV show when the contestant is made to eat something disgusting.

PICT2962.jpg (143864 bytes) The boys in blue gave us a wave.
PICT2965.jpg (171897 bytes) Andy consulting his Michelin map outside the restaurant.  Daryl took a peek even though he had a GPS.  I think he was not yet entirely comfortable with the technology :-)
bc11.jpg (79752 bytes) Just before Laviana they have built another new stretch of road so we missed the turn onto the As252 on the first pass.  The As252 is a steep very winding climb up a forested mountainside (at least we were getting some shade from the trees).
bc12.jpg (69086 bytes) Rounding a bend at the top I was presented with an unusual hazard that I only normally see on Dartmoor.
bc13.jpg (62053 bytes) And a great view down the other side
PICT3029.jpg (157954 bytes) The hotel was up this little road.
PICT2980.jpg (108371 bytes) When we arrived here (Ca'l Xabú) at 17:15 the temperature was 93 °F and our first move was to down about 3 litres of water each.  The owner's son is the chef and an excellent one too.  We had an exceptional meal with some interesting wines.  The accommodation was slightly more cramped than we had been used to but it was very clean and functional.  A truly marvelous find and very good value.
