Day 7 - To Selores, Cantabria - 70.8 miles

spain2003profile7.jpg (14866 bytes) Day 7 profile

Early start this time, on the road at 10:30.  Through Cangas de Onís and onto the As114 our eventual destination the Camino Real at Selores from whence we started.  There were plenty of road works along this road.  As we approached one we found that the chaps on either end of the section with the Stop/Go signs were sharing our frequency on the PMR radio.  My Spanish is poor but I reckon there was lots of "Good looking blonde in a Peugeot coming through" comments.  At least that's what it sounded like to me.  I don't know what wattage they were working with but we could hear them for a good couple of miles before and a good few after.

7me.jpg (55506 bytes) Stopped on the As114 for the inevitable photo opportunity
PICT1226.jpg (41843 bytes) A few small mountains either side of this well surfaced and wide section.
hc7-01.jpg (35437 bytes) With a sheer drop to one side
hc7-02.jpg (42799 bytes) And some open aspect bends
hc7-03.jpg (34857 bytes) A rare occasion - there weren't that many cars to overtake.
interesting surface.jpg (43488 bytes) Ahh.... this shot.  Why am I riding on a dirt track?  Well the road-works were there again at N43.32396 W4.67864 and the road appeared to be blocked.  Fortunately we met an ex-pat who said "Don't worry, I know a detour."  (A bit like when your spouse says "I know a short-cut.").  Consequently, I, yet again, proved the off-road capabilities of the ST.  Susie was having problems and she had four wheels!
betterhairpinsnot.jpg (80000 bytes) This detour had some U-bends (they couldn't be described as hairpins as that implies they were rideable).  I think I lost a couple of stone on this 9 mile endurance course.
whiteknuckleride.jpg (66017 bytes) Tim took this shot back down the way we had come.  Any glare is from the white of his knuckles as he was holding on.
hc7-05.jpg (33783 bytes) Back to sanity and the N621 heading South.
hc7-06.jpg (54173 bytes) A good vantage point to wait for Susie to catch up.  The PMR radio was useless in these canyons.
midlifecrises.jpg (72321 bytes) The two mid-life crises parked side by side.
hc7-07.jpg (32716 bytes) When you see a local Ferrari parked by a restaurant it has the same implication as trucks parked by a restaurant.  The restaurant is likely to be good. [At 13:16:53 (UTC+2) Elevation 262 ft  N43.25742 W4.61650]
hc7-08.jpg (45861 bytes) And then heading East on the C6314.
yes that was the road.jpg (65413 bytes) Looking back to the West.
hc7-09.jpg (28835 bytes) Good job I'm thin!
hc7-10.jpg (39490 bytes) Breath in again.  For those who might think this is a foolhardy motorcyclist overtaking 'blind' - a few seconds before I commenced this manoeuvre I had a perfect view for about 300yds up the road down the right hand side of the truck.
hc7-11.jpg (42053 bytes) Now I know where the truck was going.  Someone had dug a chunk out of the road.  This was not going to be easy.  The surface was just loose rocks and mud.
hc7-12.jpg (45246 bytes) An automatic change of tyres at this point would have been useful - from road to off-road as in the film "Mission Impossible II" (for those of you who spotted that little mistake)
hc7-13.jpg (28191 bytes) Other hazards included concentrating on the view
hc7-14.jpg (28226 bytes) when you are approaching a corner.
hairpin2.jpg (68615 bytes) Especially one like this.
hewentthatway.jpg (40338 bytes) But you can always stop and look back and think "Did I really ride that?"
