Day 2 - To Saint Beauzeil

We were on the road at 09:40 into Mansle and then heading SE on the D6, the roads were damp and covered with fallen leaves.  The weather was overcast and more rain threatened.  At one point along this part Daryl requested a stop at a chemist as a couple of his mosquito bites looked very red and angry.  We eventually found an open chemist some 36 miles into our day's route at Javerlhac et la Chapelle St Robert, a big name for a small town.

It was along this stretch of the D75 that the road started to get more interesting although the surface was poor in places.  Once on the D675 on the way to Perigeux and we found some good biking country.  The D939 followed this with some more big sweepers.

After Perigeux the N21 leads down to Bergerac.  This is a wide, well surfaced road with lots of pleasant bends.  Just before Bergerac Daryl went ahead of me and pulled into the car park of a cafe.  Apparently I had forgotten to stop for sustenance and we had done 93 miles with only the one stop for the chemist.  I was now getting complaints from my riding partner.  OK I said, let's find somewhere for lunch as it was now 12:08.

We continued on another 6 miles until we came to the Hotel/Restaurant Flambee just north of Bergerac [N44.86959 E0.50551] at 12:19

Lunch lasted 2 hours and was excellent.

The inner man totally satisfied, we mounted up at 14:36 found our way through Bergerac and continued southwards.  The roads in this area vary between some tarmac roads and some gravel and tar.  A lot of the gravel and tar variety had some significant 'bald' spots, the biggest 'bald' spots being right on the corners :-(  There were enough bends to keep us happy and the weather was warming up nicely.  So warm I was glad to shed a layer when we stopped for petrol.

Just after Tournon d'Agenais there is a series of hairpins which I forgotten were quite as severe and when we took them a little on the hot side I looked back though my lower-side mirror to see Daryl canted over at an impressive angle - would have been good to have a rear mounted camera at that point.

We arrived at the Château de l'Hoste [N44.33829 E0.92819] at 16:18 quite glad that we had no great distances to do the next day.

That evening, having seen and sampled the menu, we considered that we ought to stay long enough to try every dish on it - unfortunately that was not possible - but we did our best.  We did well with the wine list too :-)

Total distance 158 miles
